Happy Halloween!

Happy Halloween to all those who celebrate it. I enjoyed doing a seasonal highlight with the October Horror list. I may continue this type of seasonal focus as writers may be drafting stories around the holidays as they’re in our present lives. If that would be helpful for you, let me know at steve@musictowriteto.com.

October Horror List

If you aren’t following Music to Write to on Facebook yet, you should. There you will find updates when a new album or blog post goes up. This month MtWt has focused on film scores for horror films in celebration of Halloween and all the wonderfully macabre stories it inspires us to write. Be sure […]

It’s been some time!

I haven’t posted in awhile due to some extended hours at work, rigorous work on my son’s book, and then a death in the family followed by preparations for Hurricane Matthew. We came out of the hurricane just fine. I have music lined up to post and hope to get it up here shortly! Thanks to all […]

The music of our national anthem was written by a British man for a London gentleman’s club called the Anacreontic Society for their “constitutional” song. The society was an 18th century gentleman’s club for amateur musicians. Their president, Ralph Tomlinson, created the lyrics to “To Anacreon in Heaven” and John Stafford Smith, the composer behind our national anthem, […]

4th of July Series – Rhapsody in Blue by George Gershwin

George Gershwin was a Pulitzer Prize winning American composer and pianist from Brooklyn, who, along with his lyricist brother, Ira Gershwin, created hallmarks and standards of the American musical repertoire in Broadway, cinema, and on the concert stage. His most popular work, which I wish to highlight here as music worth of your time, is Rhapsody in […]

4th of July Series: Impressions of America by Patrick Doyle

The most interesting thing about Impressions of America is that it is written by a Scotsman. Patrick Doyle is an immensely successful film score composer, with films like Brave, Thor, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, and many of the Shakespearean adaptations. Being a Hollywood composer though exposed him to the United States and here we have an outsider’s […]

4th of July Series – Copland: The Music of America

Aaron Copland, considered to be one of America’s finest composers, was instrumental in developing the distinctive American sound. Labelled in his later years as “Dean of American Composers”, his works revolve around American folklore, jazz, the American landscape, the pioneer life, and the country’s spirit. He sought to create accessible music, meaning music all could enjoy, which earned […]

More for Your Muse: Mother Falcon

Mother Falcon is a large ensemble chamber-rock band from Austin, Texas. They’re known for their collaborative songwriting and it’s clear in their music that each member of the band loves what they’re playing as they’ve all added ingredients to the pie, so to speak. The instruments used are strings, horns, guitars, and percussion, which are led […]
